How to Transfer a Gemini Conversation to ChatGPT

Maybe you started a task in Gemini and want ChatGPT's take, hit a limit, or simply prefer continuing there. Whatever the reason, there's no official bridge in this direction: Google added an import feature to Gemini, but nothing to move a conversation out to ChatGPT, and ChatGPT has no import feature at all.

Here are the three ways that actually work, honestly compared.

Method 1: Copy-paste with a handoff prompt (free, manual)

Pasting a raw transcript into ChatGPT usually gets you a polite summary of your own conversation. Framing it as a continuation fixes that:

You are continuing a conversation that started on Google Gemini. Below is
the full transcript. Do not summarize it back to me — just pick up where
it left off, keeping the same context, decisions and tone.

The friction is on the Gemini side, and it's real:

• No "copy whole conversation" button. Gemini's copy icon copies one response at a time. For a long thread that's a lot of clicking, and your own prompts aren't included — you have to select and copy those separately.
• Selecting the whole page drags in junk. If you select-all instead, hidden accessibility labels ("You said…", "Gemini said…"), button captions and suggestion chips come along, and you'll be cleaning them by hand.
• Label the speakers ([User] / [Assistant]) or ChatGPT can conflate who said what.
• Very long chats need pruning — keep the first message (the task) and the recent tail.

Method 2: Export through Google Docs (free, partial)

Under each Gemini response there's a Share & export option that can send that response to a Google Doc. From there you can copy clean text into ChatGPT.

Two limitations to know before you rely on it:

• It exports responses, not the conversation. Your own prompts — the half that gives the thread its meaning — aren't part of the export, so you're rebuilding the dialogue by hand anyway.
• It's one response at a time. For a ten-turn conversation, that's ten exports.

Good for: carrying over one long, important answer (a report, a plan) in clean formatting.
Bad for: continuing an actual back-and-forth conversation.
