How to Export a Gemini Conversation

Gemini has no "export this conversation" button. What it has is a handful of partial options, each designed for a different job. Which one you want depends on why you're exporting — so here are all five, with their trade-offs stated plainly.

1. Copy messages one by one (quick, for snippets)

Every Gemini response has a copy icon (under the three-dot menu on some layouts). It copies that one response as clean text.

• Your own prompts aren't copyable this way — you have to select them by hand.
• If you try to select the whole page instead, hidden accessibility labels ("You said…") and interface captions come along with the text.

Good for: grabbing one answer.
Bad for: preserving a whole back-and-forth.

2. Share & export to Google Docs (clean, per response)

Under a response, Share & export → Export to Docs creates a Google Doc with that response, formatting intact — tables and code blocks survive. There's also Draft in Gmail if the destination is an email.

• Again: it exports the response, not the conversation. Your prompts stay behind.
• One response per export.

Good for: archiving one long, valuable answer (a report, a plan) in editable form.

3. Google Takeout (everything, in bulk)

At takeout.google.com, select Gemini Apps ("My Activity" data) and Google builds you a downloadable archive of your Gemini history — prompts and responses.

• It's an archive, not a document. You get HTML activity files meant for records and data portability, not a tidy per-conversation export.
• It can take from minutes to hours to arrive, and it's all-or-nothing by product — you can't pick one conversation.
• One thing to check first: if Gemini Apps Activity is turned off in your account, there may be little or nothing to export.

Good for: a full personal backup, or leaving the ecosystem with your data.
Bad for: "I need this one chat as a file, now."

4. Print to PDF (frozen snapshot)

The browser fallback: open the conversation, press Ctrl/Cmd + P, choose "Save as PDF". You get the whole thread, prompts included, exactly as rendered.

• It's a picture of the chat, not reusable text — fine for records, clumsy for anything else.
• Long conversations may need you to scroll to the top first so the full thread is loaded before printing.

5. One-click Markdown file, or move it into another AI

Does Google Takeout include my prompts or only Gemini's answers?

No. Takeout exports per product, so you get your Gemini history as a whole. For a single conversation, print to PDF or copy it out.
