How to Transfer a ChatGPT Conversation to Gemini

Gemini is strong at long documents, search-grounded answers and anything touching the Google ecosystem — so it's a natural place to continue a conversation that started on ChatGPT. The catch: Google's own import feature is built for migrating your whole history in bulk, not for continuing the conversation you're in — and it's still arriving in Europe country by country.

Here are the three ways to do it, honestly compared.

Method 1: Copy-paste with a handoff prompt (free, manual)

Pasting a raw wall of text into Gemini gets you a summary of your own conversation — usually not what you want. Framing it as a continuation fixes that:

full transcript. Do not summarize it back to me — just pick up where it
left off, keeping the same context, decisions and tone.

The manual method's friction points:

• UI junk comes along. Selecting a ChatGPT thread drags in button labels, citations and widget content that you'll delete by hand.
• Label the speakers ([User] / [Assistant]) or Gemini can conflate who said what.
• Long chats need pruning — keep the first message (the task) and the recent tail.

Method 2: Gemini's native import — with caveats

Since March 2026, the Gemini app can import conversation history from other AI assistants: you export your ChatGPT data as a ZIP archive (up to 5 GB) and upload it. It launched US-first and began a phased European rollout in spring 2026 — by late August it had reached much of the EU, including Spain, where we are. Things to know before you plan around it:

• It's a bulk, one-time migration. It ingests your whole archive so Gemini knows your history — it's not designed for "continue this specific conversation right now", and the export-ZIP-upload loop is slow if that's all you wanted. Users also report the imported chats land as a pile of new conversations, not sorted into your history by date.
• It's one-way. Into Gemini only — there's no equivalent for moving a Gemini conversation out.
• Read the data notice. Gemini's import screen states that imported chats are stored in your activity and used to improve Google's services, including training its generative AI models.
• Rollout is country by country. If you don't see the option yet, your region may still be waiting.

Good for: permanently switching to Gemini with your full history.
Bad for: anyone who just wants to continue today's conversation, or who'd rather not feed their chat archive into Google's training pipeline.

Increasingly, yes. It launched in March 2026 without EEA, UK or Switzerland availability, then Google began a phased European rollout in spring 2026. By late August it had reached much of the EU (we can see it in Spain), but it arrives country by country — if you don't see it, your region may still be waiting.

Does Gemini understand a pasted ChatGPT conversation?

Yes — with the handoff framing, Gemini picks up mid-task and responds to the last open question. Without the framing, it tends to summarize the transcript instead of continuing it.

Can I also go the other way, from Gemini to ChatGPT?
